Non surgical blepharoplasty: does it work?

There’s a growing demand for information – both online and offline – about non surgical blepharoplasty. But what is it? Does it work? Let’s try to learn more about it.

Non surgical blepharoplasty: what is it?

In the traditional blepharoplasty – in local anesthesia – the surgeon makes an incision – with scalpel or laser – removes excess skin from eyelids, reshapes the fat around eyes. and, finally, closes incisions with micro-stitches, that are invisible as they are hidden in the eyelid fold (upper blepharoplasty) or under eyelashes, along the edge of the eye (lower blepharoplasty).

In the non surgical blepharoplasty, there are no incisions and skin removal. Instead, an electrical device applied on the skin generates electric shocks that “burn” the skin in different points at epidermis level and causes sublimation (transition from solid to gaseous state). Basically, in the burned points, the skin “evaporates”.

In this way, excess skin stretches out and wrinkles are reduced, around the eyes. The device works only on the treated areas without damaging the nearby tissues. In addition, no stitches or medication is necessary. The treatment does not require anesthesia but only the application of a topical anesthetic cream (for approximately 45 minutes; it must be removed before the treatment ).

Someone claim that non surgical blepharoplasty re-activates collagen fibers, leaving the skin more compact and toned. Actually, as the subcutaneous layer in the eyelid area is extremely thin, the positive effects of collagen fibers reactivation do not occur.

Traditional and non surgical blepharoplasty

Can we consider non surgical blepharoplasty an alternative to traditional blepharoplasty, less invasive and just as effective? Considering patients expectations, we can’t, for at least 3 reasons:

1) Effectiveness: results are similar only in case of small wrinkles and little skin excess; but when there is a lot of excess skin and/or eye bags, the traditional blepharoplasty gives much better results, because it’s more complete and acts on all fronts (excess skin or fat, muscles), for a complete eyelid reshaping and a more harmonic and natural look. The electric device is a good option for minor skin blemishes. In any case, it’s always better to ask a medical evaluation and advice to an oculoplastic surgeon.

2) Duration: in non surgical blepharoplasty, the results last about 12 months after which the treatment should be repeated. In addition, each treatment requires around 4 sessions (each month). The traditional blepharoplasty requires only 1 session and results last many years. This should be taken into account also when comparing costs.

3) Healing time: the non surgical post-op period is shorter but not without signs and pain. Swelling around the eyes and crusts in the treated areas can last from some days to some weeks..

For these reasons, traditional blepharoplasty is the best option, especially in more serious cases. As for any surgery, the specific surgeon experience and the surgery quality and safety make a real difference. Learn more

However, if you want to avoid surgery, there are also other non-invasive treatments (esthetic medicine) providing good solutions to minor blemishes:

  • Laser blepharoplasty: medical laser treatment that stimulates skin rejuvenation, regenerating skin cells and leaving the skin more toned and firm. The doctor defines the number of sessions, according to patient features. Learn more

  • PRP blepharoplasty: it consists of injections of plasma extracts rich in platelets (PRP), from the patient’s blood: the growth factors and stem cells in it stimulate the production of collagen and improve the skin texture around the eyes. Only by authorized clinics.
  • Lipofilling blepharoplasty: lipofilling is used to reshape and volumize the eye area, using the patient’s own fat, with natural results. Learn more.
