Blepharoplasty, Blepharoplasty How Does It Work

Blepharoplasty: how does it work?

Blepharoplasty is one of the most requested plastic surgeries. Actually,  eyes attract the attention and a tired look makes the face look overall older.

Blepharoplasty lifts drooping eyelids and/or clears and smoothes dark circles and eye bags, remarkably rejuvenating the face.

But how does it work?

Blepharoplasty: the importance of the first medical examination

There are different kinds of blepharoplasty.

It could concern upper eyelids or lower eyelids or both; it could involve just the escess skin or also fats, liquids, nerves, muscles. Moreover, the surgery features must fit to the peculiar characeristics of each face and type of skin.

Consequently, an in-depth medical examination is essential, in order to evaluate the clinical and aesthetic situation, to schedule pre-op tests, to understand the expected results and thus to define the best customized type of surgery.

A surgery always demands a high-level surgeon-patient empathy and connection, that can be built only through the dialog.

How does the blepharoplasty surgery work?

Blepharoplasty is a surgery under local anesthesia (and mild sedation, if the patient needs it).

The surgeon generally operates a small incision behind the eyelid furrow (upper blepharoplasty) or under lower eyelashes along the rim of the eye (lower blepharoplasty) and then removes excess skin and, if needed, reshapes fat around the eyes and repositions eyelids muscles. At the end of the surgery, he closes the incisions with micro-stitches.

In lower blepharoplasty, the incision can also be made from inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision). This means invisible scars (hidden inside the eyelid) and a better “lifting” effect under the eyes.

The surgery lasts from 45 to 90 minutes. After a few hours of rest in the clinic (for post-op monitoring) the patient can be dismissed.

What happens after the blepharoplasty surgery?

Soon after a blepharoplasty surgery, bruises and swelling appear around the eyes. Their size and duration are different in each patient.

During the first 1-2 days after the surgery, the patient may feel light discomfort, easily controlled with standard analgesics and specific creams, given or prescribed by the doctor. No other product can be used until stitches removal.

After 4/7 days, stitches are removed. The patient will have bruises for 7/10 days and then just a slight swelling that disappears within 2/3 weeks. Anyway, 2 days after stitches removal, the patient can make up to cover the signs (with hypoallergenic products and without touching the wounds).

Contact lenses can be used 1 week after the surgery, whereas sun exposure is allowed after at least 4 weeks (with total sun protection).

Warnings

As for any surgery, blepharoplasty requires an experienced and specialized surgeon (plastic surgeon), with  top surgical skills, aesthetic eye and a long story of blepharoplasty surgeries.

The surgical room must guarantee the highest level of safety and the most reliable and updated equipment.

The surgical staff must be highly trained and ready/able to assist and support the patient at any time after the surgery.

Unfortunately, many low cost clinics have trivialized this surgery, thus increasing the failure  rate and  the request of “repair” surgery.

Clinica del Viso is a medical clinic, specialized exclusively in face surgery and face esthetic medicine– notably, in blepharoplasty – thanks to:

– a specialist plastic surgeon (Dr. Christophe Buratto, 500+ blepharoplasty surgeries experience)

– a surgery room specifically designed for face/blepharoplasty and with the most advanced equipment

– a qualified, consolidated and empathetic surgical and assistance staff.
