Eye-bags, Eye Bags

How to get rid of eye bags?

Eye bags are one of the most common skin imperfections – also among young people – and source of discomfort.  Dark circles – often combined with swelling under the eyes – make eyes and face look tired, sad and older.

Let’s find out which aesthetic medicine and surgery solutions can help you to get rid of this unpleasant blemish.

Why do we have dark circles and/or eye bags?

Dark circles and eye bags often have genetic origin and get worse with age and different possible related causes: micro-circulation disorders, UV rays exposure, depression, stress, sleeping disorders, unhealthy lifestyle (smoke, alcohol …),  disease.

Dark circles are due to capillary fragility – causing micro-bleeding and blood stagnation under the eyes – or to accumulation of dark pigments (like melanin). Instead, swelling under the eyes (the so-called “eye bags”) is caused by a liquid or lipid stagnation in the area around eyes, which is due to troubles in blood or lymphatic micro-circulation, or to allergies or inflammation. As aging process goes on,  sagging skin and anomalous lipid deposits worsen the situation.

What are the best treatments to cancel eye bags?

First of all, it’s essential to identify the causes of dark circles and eye bags – through an accurate medical examination by an aesthetic doctor/surgeon – because this is the only way to define the proper treatment.

In mild cases related to temporary factors, you can rely on specific cosmetic products with different action, depending on the need: whitening (vitamin C, kojic acid), anti-oxidant (vit. E), decongestant, protecting micro-circulation (bioflavonoids, vit. C). For a better result, combine cosmetics with a healthier lifestyle (regular sleep, a diet rich in fresh season fruit and vegetables, use of sun screen and low UV exposure, regular workout, elimination of bad habits like smoking or alcohol abuse).

In more serious cases, aesthetic medicine offers 3 main solutions to dark circles and eye bags:

But when dark circles are particularly accentuated and combined with swelling (eye bags) and/or sagging skin, plastic surgery (blepharoplasty) is, by far, the best option. In fact, blepharoplasty is the most complete treatment, because it allows to operate on all fronts: extra-skin elimination, lipid/liquid accumulation draining, skin shaping and lifting. Consequently, results are definitely better and long-lasting. Learn more:
